18 top economists participate in BSE Scientific Council meeting
The group of eminent scholars, which includes four Nobel laureates, will hold its third biennial meeting to analyze the BSE's educational activities, research initiatives and institutional development.
March will end with a flurry of activity at the Barcelona School of Economics as 18 of the world's top economic scholars arrive on campus. These distinguished academics play a special role in the BSE community as members of the school's Scientific Council, an external body that meets every two years to analyze the educational activities, research initiatives, and institutional development of the School. The Council meets every two years and will hold its next meeting on March 24, 2012.
Students and faculty at the BSE will have two opportunities to hear some of these eminent scholars speak while they are in Barcelona. The first is a BSE Lecture by Prof. Kenneth J. Arrow, Professor (Stanford University, Nobel Laureate). The lecture, "The Economy as an Interactive Information System," will take place on March 22 at Banc Sabadell Auditorium.
Labor market reform debate will include three Nobel laureates in Economics
As countries like Spain adopt sweeping labor market reforms, the BSE community will hear a round table debate with five renowned economists–including three Nobel laureates in Economics–on the subject of "Exits from the crisis: labor reform and beyond." The participants will be:
- Orley Ashenfelter (Princeton University)
- Jacques Drèze (Université Catholique de Louvain)
- Robert Lucas (University of Chicago, Nobel Laureate)
- James Mirrlees (University of Cambridge, Nobel Laureate)
- Edward Prescott (Arizona State University, Nobel Laureate)
The round table will take place on March 23 at the Institute for Economic Analysis (IAE), an academic unit of the BSE. The IAE will mark the end of it 25th anniversary program with this timely and important economic debate.
Update: the round table has been relocated to the CSIC Researchers Residence in central Barcelona.
