BSE Academic Bodies Recruit Top Candidates Internationally
The UPF, UAB, IAE-CSIC, and CREI are recruiting top junior scholars to research and teach in the institutions. Recruiting efforts are international in scope and span a range of fields of economics.
Formal recruitment kicked off on December 11 - 13, when the Spanish Economic Association held their annual symposium in Zaragoza, Spain. Recruitment continued at the American Economic Association conference in San Francisco from January 2 - 5. Another opportunity for recruitment will take place in London, as part of the Royal Economic Society PhD Presentation Meeting. This event will be held on Saturday January 17 - 18 at University College London.
All four of the founding academic bodies of the BSE are actively involved in recruiting new faculty. The UPF and UAB, both of which have economics departments consistently ranked at the top within Europe, interviewed between the two more than100 candidates. IAE and the CREI, research centers based at the UAB and UPF, respectively, have interviewed around 30 candidates thus far.
The next step in the recruitment process is fly-outs. During this stage, potential hires will visit the host institution to give a talk and be interviewed. Around 40 fly-outs are expected for the 2009 recruitment process. The recruiting seminars will be posted in the seminars and events calendar of the BSE community in the coming months.
In 2008, the combined recruitment efforts of the BSE supporting academic bodies resulted in the addition of 24 new affiliated professors – 8 in the Department of Economics and Business of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 4 in the Unit of Economic Analysis of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 10 in the Institute for Economic Analysis (IAE-CSIC), and 2 in the Center for Research in International Economics (CREI).
The recruitment process is an essential part of forming and maintaining the strength of the BSE. Affiliated Professors of the BSE include top economists and researchers in economics, among which there are Fellows of the Econometric Society, Fellows of the European Economic Association, Research Fellows of the Center for Economic Policy and Research (CEPR), and Research Fellows of the CESifo. They publish in the leading journals of economics and many of the top journals of the different subfields of the discipline. They also serve as coeditors and associate editors of these journals.
