Four BSE students are among the 50 graduate students throughout Catalonia who have received a scholarship for graduate study in 2013-14 from Fundació Catalunya-la Pedrera, which recognized this year's recipients in a ceremony on October 10 at the Pedrera in Barcelona.
The scholarship awards are part of the foundation's Masters of Excellence Scholarship Program. Now in its third edition, the program aims to recognize talent, to promote excellence, and to make Catalonia a reference for quality graduate education. Each scholarship covers all master tuition fees.
"The BSE fits perfectly with the objective of the Masters of Excellence Scholarship Program, both for its advanced, competitive academic offer and as a reference institution in the economic sciences," said Marc Mallafré, who works in the foundation's Area for Knowledge and Research. "The BSE master programs are taught in Catalonia, but they compete at an international level."
Mr. Mallafré emphasized the role of the institutions themselves in the scholarship selection process. "The candidate proposals come from the organizers and directors of the master programs," he explained. "The rigorous and demanding selection process at the BSE guarantees the participation of brilliant students in the Masters of Excellence Scholarship Program."

Arnau Juanmartí "After the master program, my intention is to pursue a PhD in Economics. I will use the master program at BSE to acquire a good grounding in advanced economic theory and quantitative methods. I think the rigorous material taught in the master will provide me with indispensable tools to successfully pursue further doctoral studies."
Jaume Martí "What I would like to do after this master is to work for a financial enterprise, like a hedge fund or investment bank. I've just finished my undergraduate degree at UPF, and with the financial knowledge that I currently have it would be really difficult to reach a good position in any firm, so my goal for the BSE master program is to achieve good quantitative skills and a theoretical framework in order to be able to understand how financial markets work."
Xavier Moncasi "My idea is to continue my studies and to try to enter into a PhD program in the United States. I expect basically two things from the master program (apart from learning new things that interest me, which is an aspect that I consider crucial): first, that it increases my chances of being admitted into a PhD program in the US and, second, that it gives me the necessary tools to succeed in obtaining a PhD."
Axel Plaza "I expect the BSE master program to give me the tools to be able to do whatever I finally decide to do after graduation. Right now I think that would be to continue my education abroad and combine it with some work experience in the field of Economics. Either in the academic or professional world, I hope that participating in the program will open many doors to me." |
BSE scholarship recipient Xavier Moncasi receives his certificate from Dr. Javier Martinez-Picado, ICREA Research Professor at IrsiCaixa.
