GSE Community Holds Conferences on the Financial Crisis and Challenges of Fragility to Development Policy
On May 7-8, two separate conferences took place at the Ciutadella campus of the UPF, site of four of the BSE master programs. The Centre for Research in International Economics (CREI) - one of the academic bodies of the GSE- hosted a conference on the financial crisis, while the newly launched Center for Research on the Economies of the Mediterranean (CREMed) hosted a conference on challenges of fragility to development policy.
The Conference on the Financial Crisis, jointly sponsored by CREI and CEPR, brought researchers from many of the preeminent research institutions to share their research on some of the factors and mechanisms impacting the global economic crisis. The conference is planned around six sessions focusing on ratings, theoretical framework, risk taking behavior of banks, bank dynamics and liquidity, and European banks (programme pdf).

The conference is organized by Fernando Broner (CREI, UPF and GSE), Hans Degryse (Tilburg University and BBSS), Mathias Dewatripont (ULB and CEPR), Xavier Freixas (UPF, GSE and CEPR), Philipp Hartmann (European Central Bank and CEPR), Moshe Kim (University of Haifa, UPF, and BBSS), Elu von Thadden (Universität Mannheim and CEPR), and Paul Wachtel (New York University). Professors Freixas and Kim are joint organizers of the GSE Banking Summer School (BBSS), and Professor Broner is Deputy Director of the GSE Master in International Trade, Finance, and Development (ITFD).
The Conference on Challenges of Fragility to Development Policy takes place as part of the European Report on Development project, financially supported by the European Commission and five Member States: Finland, Luxembourg, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The conference, coordinated by the Schulmann Center at the European University Institute, is hosted by the Center for Research on the Economies of the Mediterranean (CREMed), created in November 2008 as a joint initiative of the BSE and IEMed, and was opened with welcome addresses by Georgia Giovannetti (EUI and University of Florence), Françoise Moreau (European Commission DG Development and Relations with African, Caribbean and Pacific States), Andreu Mas Colell (BSE Chairman and UPF), Teresa Garcia Milà (UPF and GSE), and Senén Florensa (IEMed).
A major aim of the conference is to analyze and discuss the root causes of fragility and their implications in development policy design. A special session will focus on innovative framework and new methodological tools to explore the underlying causes of violent conflicts and the relationship between economic factors, institutions and conflicts. Against this background, the conference will discuss how development policies should be designed in fragile countries with a focus on the role of European engagement.
