The "la Caixa"-GSE Program Offers Fourteen Full Tuition Scholarships to Students from Developing Countries

A newly signed agreement between “la Caixa” savings bank Foundation and the BSE sets up fourteen full tuition scholarships for excellent students from developing and emerging countries to study in one of the School’s master programs. These scholarships are designed to give students the opportunity to gain a top master degree so that they can later contribute to the economic growth of their native country.

The “la Caixa” Foundation scholarships are merit based, and target students from emerging and developing countries* with excellent academic backgrounds who intend to work in their home countries at the end of their professional training process. By sponsoring students from these countries, “la Caixa” and the GSE affirm their commitment to attracting and training the most talented young people from around the world, and to fostering a global student community that comes from many different backgrounds and promotes an environment of mutual learning.

This new initiative is a direct complement to the GSE’s other big program: the BBVA Foundation-GSE scholarships for Latin American students. Signed in March 2009, the BBVA-GSE program consists of five full tuition awards designed to bring the best and brightest Latin American students to study at the School. Two of the awards are especially for Mexican students and the other three are open to students from the rest of Latin America. Recipients of the scholarship will pursue their studies at the BSE’s six master programs in economics and finance, where they will have ample opportunities to maximize their potential.

There already exists a strong international community in Barcelona, the non-capital city with the third most consulates in the world, after New York City and Hong Kong. The BSE reflects this internationality; master students in 2008-2009 come from 30 different countries, and faculty of the GSE come from more than 18 different countries. Cultivating a diverse student body requires providing opportunities to study to students who are nationals of countries with emerging and developing economies.

Both the “la Caixa” and the BBVA-GSE scholarships cover the full tuition of the master program, medical insurance, and round-trip airfare from the student's country of residence, and offer a monthly stipend for expenses during the student's stay in Barcelona. All admitted applicants, including those who have already received tuition waivers, will be automatically considered for these awards.

The two newly launched programs, with combined number of nineteen full-tuition scholarships, are offered in addition to the GSE’s previously existing eighteen merit-based tuition waiver grants available to master students. These tuition waivers are generously sponsored by Repsol Foundation, Abertis, Red Eléctrica, Enagas, MSD, Fundación Carolina, Catalan Competition Authority, Patronat Catalunya-Món, Biocat, and UAB Research Park.

* “Emerging and developing countries” refers to all countries not included on the following 2008 IMF list of “advanced economies”: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong SAR, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, United States of America.
