New ERC Starting Grant, ad personam Jean Monnet Chair are the latest honors for BSE Affiliated Professors
Two BSE Affiliated Professors have been recognized this week by prestigious European research programs. Prof. Vasco Carvalho (CREI, UPF and BSE) has received a Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC), and Prof. Fernando Guirao (UPF and BSE) has been named ad personam Jean Monnet Chair of History at Universitat Pompeu Fabra.
Vasco Carvalho receives ERC Starting Grant
ERC Starting Grants are highly competitive and awarded to support frontier research by early-career research leaders on the basis of excellence, as determined by a panel of scientific peers, and they have quickly become indicators of world-class research across all academic disciplines.
The GSE affiliated faculty now includes seven ERC Starting Grant recipients, in addition to four ERC Advanced Grant recipients, which provide funding for cutting-edge research by the very best established research leaders in Europe.
Prof. Carvalho has been selected to receive a 2013 ERC Starting Grant for his project, Production Networks in Macroeconomics. "This project has two main goals," Prof. Carvalho explains. "First, it aims to provide novel evidence that we can trace back the origins of business cycles and asset price fluctuations to individual technologies interconnected by input-supply relations. Second, it aims to improve our understanding of the structure and evolution of these production networks over time."

Fernando Guirao named ad personam Jean Monnet Chair of History at UPF
The Jean Monnet Program is an initiative of the European Commission's Education, Audiovisual, and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA). The Program supports teaching, research and reflection in the field of European integration studies both within and outside the European Community.
Prof. Guirao has held the Jean Monnet Chair on the History of European Integration at UPF since 1995, and has now been named Jean Monnet Chair of History ad personam, meaning that the grant is linked directly to him rather then to the institution where he conducts research. He is the first researcher in Catalonia and only the third in Spain since 2008 to receive this distinction.
Prof. Guirao will use the funding associated with the Chair for his project History matters! Learning from the past in times of crisis.
In addition to these two academic distinctions, two BSE Affiliated Professors were acknowledged with important appointments earlier this month:

He will assume his new role before October first of this year and will continue to teach courses and serve as Scientific Director of the BSE master program in Competition and Market Regulation. read more |
