The hybrid format allowed professionals to choose attending virtually from their homes or at campus in Barcelona

The Barcelona School of Economics organized the intensive course ‘Competition in Digital Markets’ from November 29th to December 3rd. This was the second edition of the course and 56 participants could attend the course either in person at the Ciutadella Campus in Barcelona or virtually. This course was directed by Massimo Motta, former Chief Competition Economist at the European Commission.

Participants of this course could understand how the digital economy works, and under what conditions competition may not function as it should in this sector. They were provided with a thorough understanding of how to evaluate the substitutability between different offerings and a framework to address mergers and acquisitions of smaller and/or potential competitors

"The course content provided me with a broad and deep enough view of competition in digital markets (practice and theory) over the last 15 years. Although I have worked in competition for over a decade, continuous upskilling in this field seems crucial to me. The course was not only about technical teaching and learning, but also about exposure to excellent leadership and mentoring, as well as global knowledge sharing. Questions, debate, and practical discussions made the course deeply thought provoking and useful."

Helen Kean Redpath, Independent Economist

Faculty of this course was formed by leading international competition scholars and practitioners in the field of competition:

  • Chiara Fumagalli (Associate Professor of Economics, Bocconi University)
  • Gábor Koltay (Senior Economist in the European Comission's DG Competition Chief Economist Team)
  • Massimo Motta (Professor of Economics, ICREA-UPF and BSE; former Chief Competition Economist, European Commission) - course director
  • Martin Peitz (Professor of Economics, University of Mannheim)
  • Antonio Penta (ICREA-UPF and BSE)

"The course was a great opportunity to interact with professors, who were happy to answer questions during lectures and coffee breaks. It was also great to meet colleagues from a variety of roles in the Competition field, and learn about their professional experience."
