BSE Research Network Organizes Economics Trobada VII

Nearly 100 members of the Barcelona Economics community gathered at the Institut d’Estudis Catalans on Friday, October 16 for the seventh edition of the annual Barcelona Economics Trobada. Organized by the BSE Research Network, the Trobada provides an opportunity for faculty, researchers, and students to come together at the beginning of the academic year to learn about the latest research happening across the Network in a relaxed and informal setting.

This year’s Trobada program featured 15 GSE affiliated professors including returning faculty, master program directors, and newcomers for the 2009-10 course. Faculty from each of the School’s four founding academic bodies presented work and chaired the conference sessions. The five lectures and closing roundtable panel covered topics that ranged from the incentive effects of Affirmative Action to the role economists may have played in the global financial crisis.

At midday BSE Research Network director Prof. Enriqueta Aragonès (IAE and BSE) discussed Network events for Fall 2009 including the Recognition Program call for papers and the 17th Barcelona Economics Lecture to be given by Prof. Suzanne Scotchmer (UC Berkeley) on November 10 at the Banc Sabadell Auditorium.

Before the lunch break, Dean of the School Prof. Massimo Motta, Director-General Dr. Eduard Vallory, and GSE Chairman Prof. Andreu Mas-Colell presented a brief update of BSE institutional news regarding master program admissions, the School’s endowment, and the use of the endowment’s revenues to fund the GSE’s appointment of a new category of Research Professors.

All those in attendance enjoyed lunch in the tranquil 17th-century cloister and atrium of the Casa de Convalecència, home of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans in the Raval neighborhood in the heart of central Barcelona.
